What is NAPLAN?
The short answers to the questions parents ask most.
What is it?
NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. It is a national check of the reading, writing, language and maths skills students need for learning.
Who takes it?
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across Australia sit NAPLAN at school each March. Most tests are taken online.
Why do students take it?
It shows whether students are developing the literacy and numeracy skills expected for their year, and gives families and schools a national point of comparison. It is not a pass-or-fail test.
How many students sit it?
More than 1.2 million students sat NAPLAN in March 2026. Over 95% of students in Years 3, 5 and 7 took part, and over 92% in Year 9.
How is it scored?
Each test places your child's result on a national scale for that area. The result is then reported as one of four proficiency levels. Most online tests adjust their difficulty to the student's answers.
What is a good result?
Strong or Exceeding means your child is meeting or going beyond expectations for their year. In 2026, about 2 in 3 students reached Strong or Exceeding.
What does the result show?
Your child's level in each area, compared with the national average for their year. It shows strengths and areas that may need support at the time of testing.
Why does it matter?
It is an early signal. Because Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 use the same scale, families can see progress over time and spot gaps before they grow.
